Learning to Like

It was a small transition day in my life. Today I took another step to like what I have and not what I don't have. It arrived in the mail and is called "Family Handyman" magazine. It is significant for what didn't arrive in the mail, "Chesapeake Bay Magazine." I have subscribed to Chesapeake Bay Magazine for years and have even had four articles published in it. I love the magazine and read it whenever I have a spare minute. The problem is that it is filled with what I don't have. I don't have a Bayliner Cierra 2452 or a Bristol 26 sailboat or any other boat (well I have a sailing dinghy, but it is just a lake boat - I wouldn't want to take it out on the bay). I don't have waterfront property with a long dock and stunning sunset views. I don't have enough space in my budget to eat crab cakes at waterfront restaurants or wander around the quaint shops in Saint Michael's. And I certainly don't have the time to spend the summer exploring all the gunk holes and remote anchorages described by the cruise of the month. But I do have a house filled with things that need to be fixed.

And so my subscription to Chesapeake Bay magazine expires this month and my subscription to Family Handyman begins this month. I am attempting to foster a love of tinkering around the house, fixing things, making things nice and other activities that will be a blessing to my family - which I have. I am attempting to starve a love of standing at the helm of my yacht bringing her to the restaurant dock at sunset for an evening of very expensive crab cakes - which I don't have. It seems like life is a lot simplier by learning to like what you have.
