John 19
I read the story of Jesus's crucifixion in John 19 this morning. It was carried out in a remote Roman occupied territory by handful of bureaucrats trying to appease a small mob of subjugated, self-important hypocrites. It was ugly, brutal and only seemed relevant to a handful of uneducated peasants. But the entire world pivoted about that moment and everything changed. The most momentous events in history pale in comparison to that seemly tiny event. There is nothing even remotely comparable to the crucifixion as an event, a story or a world changing moment. And yet it was so completely insignificant by all outward appearances. I found it simply stunning.
